The Bronze House
The Bronze House is a story of friendship, trust, and finely crafted architecture. Designed by Jane Merrylees for her lifelong friend Em and her family of five, the home reflects a rare and intuitive collaboration. Every decision was guided by instinct and understanding, producing a house that is both deeply personal and profoundly architectural.

Set on a bustling school corner in Brighton, the home embraces its urban setting while maintaining a quiet, confident presence. In dialogue with its sibling residence, The Dendy Sister, The Bronze House asserts its individuality through a sculptural bronze façade—an expressive skin that both shields and reveals, evolving over time with a natural patina.
Internally, intelligent planning supports the rhythm of daily family life. A central circulation axis connects the entry, feature stair, family living, and utility areas, balancing efficiency with moments of delight. A dedicated “utility pod” ensures order in the everyday, while open living spaces connect effortlessly to landscaped courtyards and a pool terrace.
The restrained material palette combines bronze, Sto render, and warm tactile finishes. Each choice was guided by longevity, affordability, and sensory appeal, delivering a home that feels both robust and refined.
Sustainability is integral: passive solar design, battery storage, and enduring finishes ensure the home’s resilience well into the future.
The Bronze House is not just a building; it is an architectural expression of friendship and trust. It is a sanctuary in the city—tailored, enduring, and deeply human.
