The Bach Pad, Hampton

Matt asked us to design a robust bachelor pad built with natural, earthy materials.

An overarching use of black defines the private interiors of the Bach Pad. Hard lines and dark surfaces are punctuated with timber veneer and textured finishes and the intimate living spaces are concealed form the street by a reflective glass façade.

Designed for a bachelor owner seeking a low maintenance, enduring home, we were able to inject surprising gestures and materials into the design. The feature staircase leads to a light filled landing, where a curved skylight creates a dramatic pattern of light throughout the day. The stair wall is clad with a custom black metal mesh screen and conceals a secret luxurious powder room. The metal screen is repeated on the rear façade where it provides privacy for the first floor bedrooms and encloses a bedroom balcony.

Sitting within a dense suburban context and on a relatively small piece of land, The Bach Pad employs clever design techniques and materials to provide privacy while still maintaining generous sightlines and connections to the outdoors.
